Proclamation Declaring March 2021 as American Red Cross Month. (City Manager 2110) [Informational only, will not be presented]
Body
Proclamation
Whereas, the American Red Cross was chartered in 1881 by Congress and authorized to act in times of need to provide compassionate assistance to people afflicted by personal, local or national disasters; and
Whereas, in the last year, the American Red Cross helped families with temporary housing, clothing, food, and mental health counseling during hundreds of local disasters; and
Whereas, the American Red Cross Bay Area was founded in 1898. Their work includes training people in lifesaving CPR, First Aid and water safety, and providing information and skills needed for our community members to be safe at home, work, school and at play; and
Whereas, through the Pillowcase Project and the Home Fires Campaign, individuals and families received fire prevention training and supplies, including smoke alarms; and
Whereas, the Red Cross staff deploy with the U.S. Military to provide emergency communications, counseling, financial assistance, as well as a caring presence to local military families; and
Whereas, American Red Cross Blood Services support Bay Area Hospitals by providing them with thousands of units of red cells, platelets, and plasma for patients in need, which has been a critical need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft, Mayor of the City of Alameda, do hereby proclaim March 2021 as American Red Cross Month in the City of Alameda, and thank the staff and volunteers for their invaluable work and efforts, 365 days a year, in our community and around the country.
