BACKGROUND
At the end of Central Avenue at Eastshore Drive, there is a short pedestrian pathway to the water.
Denise Sims, an Alameda resident, approached Alameda Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) staff with a request to install a small memorial in honor of her son who died on this pathway.
DISCUSSION
This is the information from Ms. Sims about her memorial.
"The piece of art I made and designed specifically to be installed at this location is in honor of my beloved son, Austin. He died at this location.
I am a commercial artist and Austin was an amazing artist himself. This commemorative public art piece is an aligned piece and reflection of Austin's Spirit as well as honoring all sons and daughters who've passed. More specifically designed and aligned to honor the passing of youth.
Additionally, I've supported public arts for over 30 years.
I view public art as a community contribution enhancing our beautiful 'Island Nation', and there are many artists who live here. More public art in Alameda is a fitting reflection of the people who live here and enriches community spaces as well.
Additionally, Austin was cremated. I've had numerous requests from youth friends about demarcating a place that honors Austin in reverence.
This art piece dominantly reflects a community spirit to honor sons and daughters who've passed, as well as Austin.
The piece is made of steel painted in enduring lacquer spray paint and oil. Even though it's public, I take full responsibility for managing any repair or refurbishment in the case it were defiled in any way.
In support of commemoration and public arts, I request the approval of this permanent installation."
