Re: Review and Recommend Bay Bridge BMX Park Concept Plan

BACKGROUND

Cassandra Caron, of the nonprofit organization Bay Bridge BMX (BBB), approached City staff with a concept for a BMX bike park located to the west of the skate park at Alameda Point.  Ms. Caron will make the concept presentation to the Recreation and Parks Commission.

DISCUSSION

BMX (bike motocross) is a quickly growing sport that serves families and youth as young as two years old.  Over the last nine years, several proposals for BMX facilities have been made to City staff and there is a clear community desire for more recreational opportunities for bicycling.  Many bicyclists can be seen on the skate park because they have no other facilities to ride.

This is a high level concept proposal that is a proposed partnership between the City of Alameda and BBB.  The full proposal is included in Exhibit 1.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

The funding for construction is fully dependent upon fundraising by BBB.  The Commission may consider recommending seed funding from the Recreation Facility Fund that would provide funding for a civil engineer to assess utilities and USA BMX architect to design the facility.  If recommended, this seed funding would be included in the community input process planned this summer.

RECOMMENDATION

To provide feedback and make a recommendation on the Bay Bridge BMX Park Concept Plan.

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Wooldridge, Recreation and Parks Director
