Re: Review and Recommend Educational Signage and Location Proposed for Chochenyo Park

BACKGROUND

On January 19, 2021 the City Council approved renaming the park formerly known as Jackson to Chochenyo Park.  The new park sign was installed and a park name celebration was held.  The final component is installing an educational sign about Chochenyo Park.

Staff worked with Ryan LaLonde, an Alameda graphic designer, who graciously provided his services at no cost to the City.  The high level concepts and content were developed by Raquel Williams and Dr. Jessica Santone of the Park Renaming Committee.

We sent the draft sign to several people for review and incorporated nearly all comments received.  This included Corrina Gould of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan as well as Rasheed Shabazz, Dr. Jessica Santone and Raquel Williams from the Park Renaming Committee and sent the draft to Woody Minor and Dennis Evanovsky as local historians.

DISCUSSION

The current sign layout is 78” by 30” and includes three major topic areas:  park timeline, “What does Chochenyo mean?” and though provoking questions to spark community and individuals discussions.  It also includes images and a QR code that will link to the City website that provides resource links to educational curriculum, videos, the Confederated Villages of Lisjan and Sogorea Té Land Trust.

Next steps include:

Incorporating feedback from the Commission and remaining reviewers.

Finish adding source credit for text and securing permission for all images.

Work with a company to produce the sign.  This may slightly adjust the dimension and/or layout but the content will remain.

Build the City webpage with resources and signage information that is the landing site for the QR code.

Install the sign in the park.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Funding is allocated for production and installation of the educational sign.

RECOMMENDATION

Review and make comments on the educational signage and location proposed for Chochenyo Park.

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Wooldridge, Recreation and Parks Director
