Re: Review and Approve Solar Panel Walk Eagle Scout Project.

BACKGROUND

The Solar Panel Walk is proposed along Shoreline Trail which encompasses Bay Farm Island.  This project is proposed by Ryan Liu as his Eagle Scout project.

DISCUSSION

The following information is provided by Mr. Liu.

My name is Ryan Liu, and I am currently a junior at Alameda High.  I was born and raised in Alameda and I am a Life Scout with Alameda Troop 2.  I love to be outdoors, either with hiking and camping or through sports.

An Eagle project is a service project that is helpful to any religious institution, school, or community. This project helps demonstrate a Scout’s leadership and project management skills.

As our communities are becoming more and more virtual, both due to the development of technology and because of Covid, people are staying inside more than ever. I’ve noticed especially in our younger generation that the majority of kids and teens would prefer to stay inside instead of going out.  I decided to make this my Eagle Project to encourage people to go outside, and enjoy the outdoors.

My Eagle project proposal is a Solar Walk. This project would be to add informational planetary signs to the Bayfarm Shoreline Trail. There would be 8 separate signs, corresponding with each planet in our solar system including the Sun. Each trail sign would be mounted on a wooden or metal post with a sign board attached. Each sign board would contain information about each planet. On the Solar walk each planet's actual distance from the sun is scaled down 1000x onto the trail, which would be approximately 2.7 miles from start to finish. My proposed project schedule is to begin in January and finish around May.

I believe that this Solar Walk would be a great addition to this trail, and would give families another reason to go out and enjoy the trail.

FINANCIAL IMPACT
