EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On December 6, 2022, the City of Alameda (City) City Council awarded the Littlejohn Park Recreation Building Restoration Project to Bjork Construction, Inc. (File 2022-2611). The project, which is now complete, was necessitated by an arson fire that occurred in April 2021. The construction scope executed under the subject agreement is complete and acceptable to Public Works. Staff recommends that City Council accept the work.

BACKGROUND

The Littlejohn Park Recreation Center, built in 1976, was significantly damaged by an arson fire in April 2021. The resulting fire, smoke and water damage rendered the facility uninhabitable. The project, which is now complete, has yielded a fully restored facility with increased accessibility, upgraded mechanical systems, increased storage capacity and WiFi interconnectivity. The building has also been equipped with an upgraded HVAC system and is now a fully electric facility. Funding for construction was primarily provided by the City's insurance carrier, however the storage upgrades, air filtration upgrades and Wi-Fi interconnectivity were paid by the City with General Funds for a sum of $55,211. The $250,000 insurance deductible was also funded by the General Fund.
