BACKGROUND

Since 2012, three major park development projects have been in the planning and design phases in Alameda. These projects include Jean Sweeney Open Space Park, Estuary Park and the Krusi Park Recreation Center Replacement. All three projects are now nearing construction with the larger projects being phased, based on funding.

Jean Sweeney Open Space Park (Sweeney Park) is a 27-acre park bounded by Constitution Way, Atlantic Avenue, and Sherman Street. The site is the former Alameda Beltline Railroad property that was secured by the City at its original purchase price due the advocacy efforts of long-time resident Jean Sweeney. On July 15, 2015, the City Council approved the Sweeney Park Master Plan, which was designed pro bono by Kristoffer K?ster of KKDesign through an extensive public input process.

Estuary Park is an 8-acre park formerly owned by the Navy and located on Mosely Avenue near Singleton Avenue. Phase 1 is 4-acres on the west side of the site that will be dedicated to athletic fields including one lighted synthetic turf rectangular field for soccer, lacrosse, rugby, and foo...
