EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 2014, the City of Alameda (City) entered into a five year, $68,250 agreement with the Califa Group to allow it to connect to CENIC's high speed fiber optic network. Staff are now recommending that this agreement be extended for an additional five years t for the $65,000.

BACKGROUND

In 2014 the Califa Group, on behalf of the California State Library, contracted with CENIC to provide high speed fiber optic networking to libraries in California at an E-rated discount. The Alameda Free Library was one the first wave of California libraries to take advantage of this opportunity by entering into an agreement with the Califa Group. The original contract is now set to expire on June 30, 2020.

DISCUSSION

Prior to the CENIC fiber optic network, the Library used the Comcast broadband network for Internet access. With a maximum network speed of 100Mbps for staff and patrons, the reliability was unpredictable and slow. Migrating to the CENIC fiber optic network has allowed all three library locations to experience a high speed network of 1Gbps. In addition, the library network security and reliability has been fortified by the CENIC network. CENIC staff also completes the required paperwork for e-Rate discounts which play a significant role in the reduced cost to the Library for Internet connectivity.

ALTERNATIVES

1. Amend the contract for an additional five years in order to all the library to maintain Internet service to the staff and patrons.
